CAST & CONNECT
Inclusive Outdoor Programming for Youth Mental Health & Connection
The Need
Across Maryland, a growing number of middle and high school students report persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, and social isolation. At the same time, thousands of students with autism and different abilities require inclusive environments that support both emotional and developmental growth. Traditional settings don’t always work for every child. That’s where Cast & Connect comes in.
Our Approach
Cast & Connect uses structured fishing experiences to:
• Build emotional regulation skills
• Reduce anxiety through nature-based engagement
• Foster peer connection and mentorship
• Strengthen confidence through skill development
• Create inclusive spaces for youth with different abilities
Fishing provides a calm, focused environment where youth can unplug, slow down, and experience success at their own pace.
Why Fishing Works
Outdoor experiences have been shown to:
• Lower stress levels
• Improve mood and attention
• Increase social engagement
• Support sensory regulation
For youth with autism and different abilities, the predictable rhythm of casting and reeling can be grounding and empowering.
