STUDENT MENTORS

Empowering Teens. Inspiring Inclusion. Changing Lives Outdoors.

The LABF Student Mentor Program gives high-school students the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities—while developing leadership skills, confidence, and a lifelong love for service.

We pair trained high-school mentors with participants during our year-round fishing adventures, nature-based outings, and community partner programs across Maryland. Together, mentors and mentees build friendships, practice inclusion, and experience the joy that comes from being outdoors.

Why Become a LABF Student Mentor?

Student mentors are at the heart of what makes Lucky & Blessed Fishing special. Mentors:

  • Build meaningful, one-on-one connections with individuals of all abilities

  • Learn leadership, communication, patience, and teamwork

  • Gain hands-on experience in adaptive outdoor recreation

  • Earn verified service-learning hours

  • Become part of a supportive community of volunteers, educators, anglers, and naturalists

  • Make a lasting impact—one fishing trip or nature day at a time

What Student Mentors Do

LABF mentors help create safe, inclusive, and fun experiences at our programs:

🎣 Adaptive Fishing Days (April–November)

Mentors assist participants with rods, reels, bait, casting, cheering them on, and celebrating every catch.

🌿 Winter Nature & Environmental Programs (January–March)

Students support park naturalists and LABF staff during hands-on learning about wildlife, conservation, and environmental stewardship.

⭐ After-School Mental Health & Fishing Club

Mentors provide encouragement, help with activities, and model positive social connections for youth who benefit from extra support.

☀️ Summer Camps

LABF runs inclusive summer days with fishing, boat time, nature hikes, outdoor games, and leadership opportunities for student volunteers.
